Susan Matos-Cloke M.D. – New Jersey Bioidentical Hormone Doctor
Often times, patients that have been feeling run-down, forgetful, or uninterested in their surroundings are suffering from a hormonal imbalance. The body needs hormones to keep them working optimally and to feel energized. As aging occurs, there is a natural decline in hormone levels, which can negatively impact the quality of life when they decline below a certain point.
At Advanced Hormone Solutions, Dr. Matos-Cloke provides advanced bio-identical hormone replacement therapies to help patients reclaim their wellbeing. Unlike synthetic hormones, bio-identical hormones are created to be indistinguishable from the hormones that occur naturally within the human body to give patients the advantageous effects of necessary hormones without the same negative side effects of traditional synthetic hormones.
Bio-identical hormones are compounds that are engineered to look and behave just like natural hormones, which the body produces regularly. Hormones such as testosterone, estrogen, DHEA, thyroid, melatonin, and progesterone, to name a few, all have bio-identical hormone equivalents. They are easily processed in the body, with little to no side effects. That is because bio-identical hormones are created from natural ingredients, like soy or wild yams, and thus, may not have any harsh consequences on the body, unlike earlier synthetic compounds that were used in the past for hormone replacement therapy. Because bio-identical hormones are created from natural ingredients and are structurally identical to natural hormones, they are considered to be the safest form of hormone replacement therapy on the market today.
Hormonal imbalances can occur during any stage of one’s life. If patients are experiencing a number of symptoms, such as frequent headaches, restlessness, exhaustion, dry skin, mood swings, and weight gain, they may be good candidates for bio-identical hormone replacement therapy. Patients suffering from low libido can most definitely increase their sex drive and tremendously improve energy levels by taking bio-identical hormones that regulate or stimulate testosterone. Bodies change over time, and although women who have gone through menopause are at risk of experiencing hormone imbalances, they are not alone. Individuals that have given birth, are overstressed or over worked, have not been eating right or exercising, are also at risk.
Although women are commonly treated for hormone imbalances because of the onset of menopause, men also are at risk of hormone imbalances, particularly when it comes to testosterone. Testosterone deficiencies can cause many side effects, including lack of energy, lack of libido, poor concentration, higher body fat, and a loss of muscle tone. If men are experiencing these symptoms, it may be due to a hormone imbalance.
Typically, hormone replacement therapy is carried out for several weeks, and then a second blood test may be requested in order to gauge the response to the current regimen of therapy. Women are typically tested 3 weeks into the procedure and men after 6 weeks. The body may “kick in” and rebalance hormones after a certain period of time, or patients may find that they need ongoing treatment to keep hormone balance in check. After receiving treatment, patients should begin noticing a difference within 1 to 2 weeks. After 2 to 3 weeks of receiving the therapy, most patients experience a marked improvement in symptoms.
Some bio-identical hormones are administered by tablet, injection or via tiny pellets, which are inserted into a small incision just beneath the upper layer of skin and covered with a simple dressing.
Hormones play a significant role in how the body behaves and ultimately, in how well a person feels. In certain studies, taking bio-identical hormones has shown to have protective qualities against breast and ovarian cancer, osteoporosis, high cholesterol, and heart disease.
Dr. Matos-Cloke believes that aging does not have to mean feeling less than how a person may have felt during youth. Her goal is to help patients reclaim the joy in their lives regardless of age.
Advanced Hormone Solutions consultants are trained in Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy and will work closely with patients to assist them through the process of beginning BHRT. The process begins with a detailed lab study that is based on a simple blood test and ends with a doctor’s appointment, at which point symptoms will be addressed with a specific line of treatment. It is important to note each regimen is specifically tailored to each patient, and nutrition and exercise are equally important in developing a treatment.
